Soul Orbs are long term upgrades unlocked with Crystals. They are unlocked at level 30.
Soul Orbs are leveled using Sacrificial Offerings, which can be obtained by sacrificing Gold, or Fish.

Upgrading Orbs[]
When an orb reaches level 100, it increases by 1 star and resets to level 0.
The base buff % = stars 2 * (2, 3, 4 or 5) depending on the orb. The buff % per level = (stars * 0.08 + 0.04) * (0.2 * (2, 3, 4 or 5)) depending on the orb.
The XP per Level is also equal to the maximum number of SOs a player needs to star-up the orb from level 0 (with level 1 Sacrificial Tower).
Each Orb has a different star cap, with most being 10.

Resetting Orb Collection[]
When clicking the reset button on top of the soul orbs window, you can reset all your orbs for 500 Crystals . They stay at the same level/tier/level progress. Just imagine you get 1 orb to unlock every time you unlock a soul orb. You will get these back after resetting your orbs. After reset, all your orbs will say "free", which means you can pick new orbs (depending on how many orbs you had unlocked before!). After using your free orbs, you have to unlock new orbs with Crystals again.
Individual Orbs can also be locked for 50 Crystals.
Sacrificial Offerings[]

Sacrificial Offerings can be bought for an increasing amount of Gold or Fish Value. The Gold and Fish costs reset daily.
